This is the best book I’ve read this year. Sam and Sadie’s relationship defies every label — not quite romantic, deeper than friendship, tangled with ego and jealousy and genuine love. Zevin uses video games as the lens and it works brilliantly even if you’ve never touched a controller. The NPC chapter broke me. The way it handles disability, race, creative partnership, and grief all at once without feeling heavy-handed is masterful. I think about this book constantly.
