Ship of Magic is a commitment — 800+ pages of maritime fantasy — and I don't regret a single one. Hobb writes three storylines that shouldn't work together (a sentient ship, a pirate uprising, a family inheritance battle) and braids them into something operatic. Althea fighting for her birthright while the world treats her as less-than is infuriating and propulsive. This is the kind of fantasy that makes you forget you're reading.
