I don’t usually read sci-fi but my officemate wouldn’t stop talking about this and WOW. The science is dense but Weir makes it accessible through Ryland’s voice — he explains things the way a teacher would, which makes sense because he IS a teacher. But the real heart of this book is Rocky. Their friendship across species, across language, across everything — it’s the purest relationship I’ve read in years. That final choice Ryland makes? I was sobbing. Actual tears.
