I was skeptical about an octopus POV character but Marcellus is the most compelling narrator I've encountered all year. Van Pelt uses his observations of the aquarium visitors to reflect human behavior back at us in the most cutting, tender way. Tova's grief, Cameron's aimlessness, and the mystery connecting them — it all weaves together beautifully. The final revelation about Tova's son made me ugly-cry on the jeepney. This book is a hug disguised as a mystery.
