I actually enjoyed Secrets of the Volkovs more than I expected to! It was such a quick, easy read and I really liked the fast flow and shorter chapters. There was constantly something happening, with plenty of twists, suspense and danger to keep me wanting to carry on.
Dariya was definitely my favourite character. I loved her humour and how resilient and loyal she was despite everything happening around her. I also really enjoyed Antonin and Nikolina, particularly Antonin’s partnership and the relationships between the characters.
My main issue was actually that I wanted more. The story had so much happening that at times it felt like a much longer book had been condensed into 168 pages. I would have loved more description, more conversations between the siblings and more time to really explore certain characters and relationships. I especially wanted to know more about Dariya and where her story goes.
There was definitely enough here to make me want to read Ellie Jay again, though. I think there’s a really good story underneath it and I came away feeling like I just wanted it to have more room to breathe.
A really enjoyable 4-star read, and I’d definitely pick up more from Ellie Jay.
