I have braved myself for months since the book was released in the market before I finally relented and started reading it. Honestly, the best decision I've made so far.
Alchemised is set in a dark, dystopian, war torn world setting with magic realism and supernatural beings. It mainly focuses on politics, war, the aftermath of war and how it affects people, and romance subplot with enemies to lovers.
Helena Marino is a foreign-born Alchemist, with powers she was forbidden to use. Once a healer for the The Order of Eternal Flame, was now a prisoner - believed to be hiding something crucial, a confidential information about the Resistance group, in her mind.
She has no one to rely on, all her friends and everyone she knows from The Resistance is dead. And being held captive in the close proximity of High Reeve, she has no choice but to fight for her survival and prevent him from uncovering the buried memories.
Kaine Ferron is the deadliest soldier of the new Paladia. After winning the war, he climbed ranks to become the High Reeve, widely feared villain amongst the people.
So when Helena Marino was captured, the duty of interrogating and unfurling her hidden memories falls on him. He is cold, cruel and everything Helena despises. There's a constant push and pull between them, until things start changing and memories start to return.
Emotionally, the book was devastating but the world building, characters, their arcs, the setting and the story is amazing. I admit the magic system was hard to understand but the book is more than that. It was not an easy read for me at all as some things were unsettling, and hard to read but it was totally worth it.
